About ME

I  have loved. I have lost. I  have failed. I   have succeeded.

Let's uncover the secrets for a good life together.

Who would have thought the little black boy from the projects would grow up to become a Harvard Medical School Graduate and open his very own practice in Savannah, Ga. Each of his siblings educated professionals…. intelligent, yet worldly…. Classy, yet soulful. Faith and family were the only resources available and turned out to be the only resources required.

No, I’m not a Doctor and I didn’t go to Harvard Medical School. That doctor is my great uncle Don, and his story perfectly sets the tone for my family, and who I am.

My great-grandmother didn’t have much money, but she was the type of woman to take pride in what she did have. She would make her children go around the housing projects with bags to pick up trash, not caring who it belonged to. She kept their clothes clean and pressed, even if they didn’t have many, their hair nice and neat, and fed them well. For her, where you lived did not determine how you lived. She forced them to bond in spending time, sharing clothes, and protecting one another. She created a closeness of family that to this day remains impenetrable.  Right there amid poverty, and exclusion, and often violence, she grew a family of self-respecting, well-mannered men and women.

So, at this point, you’re probably wondering why I’m writing about my uncle and great-grandmother instead of myself right?

Well, this is my story and the very core of my experience. Growing up in my family, I never had to “choose a side.” I was taught both! I was taught to understand and deal with people who had very little in wealth, and education and resources, and people who had abundance. I  was taught when to assimilate to “ghetto” culture but to also be a scholar and exude grace. I've gone through life with many different groups of friends, all representing little pieces of me, but all varying vastly from each other. In that, I  became a resource to my friends, and associates, colleagues, and peers.

I’ve gone through life experiencing both sides to every story. I’ve been wild and free, and I’ve been committed and in love. I’ve worked in corporate America where I sat across from CEOs and executive leaders, and I’ve worked all night long on movie and tv sets. I’ve partied many of Saturdays, only to get back home in enough time to make it to church on Sunday morning. I’ve been at rock bottom and overtaken by anxiety, and I’ve been a beacon of light spreading hope to people across the globe.

So here I am…. Using my life experiences and my love for poetry and creative writing in the most inspiring and interesting way that I can.
